The Noyce Scholarship program is an outgrowth of a new partnership between Portland State University's Graduate School of Education and the Center for Science Education and the Beaverton School Districtand Hillsboro School Districts. The goal of this partnership is to put scholarship in science teaching, learning and
education theory into practice in the classroom.
To accomplish this goal, the Noyce scholarship program is designed to graduate a
group of Elementary & Secondary level teacher scholars who will advance
this mission.
The two-year intensive program includes one year to earn a Masters in Science Teaching (MST) and the second year to earn an Oregon teaching licensecd through the Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP). The Noyce program at PSU has two tracks: one for future Elementary Educators and one for future Secondary Educators. Both include training for working with bilingual and underrepresented student populations, as well as the integration of technology into science teaching practice. Both Elementary & Secondary level Noyce scholars will be required to teach for 2 years for each year of funding (a total of 4 years) at a high-need public school in the U.S. upon graduation. See "obligations" section below for details.
Applications to the current cohort are no longer being accepted for the 2008-09 academic year. However, we are accepted inquiries for a 2009-2011 cohort.
Who is eligible to apply?
Individuals holding a minimum of a B.S./B.A. in a science, engineering or math discipline OR students who are currently admitted to a Masters in Science Teaching program at PSU.
What financial assistance does the PSU Noyce program offer?
| Year One:$7,000 scholarship for completion of the senior year of a B.S./B.A. in science, math or engineering and/or the completion of the MST year of the Noyce program | | Year Two: A $10,000 stipend to complete the GTEP |
The scholarship stipend is considered part of the total financial aid package allocated to each student. Funds are divided up by terms of enrollment and disbursed in equal parts per term. For example, students who expect to be enrolled full time during the summer term will receive four disbursements, one each for fall, winter, spring and summer. Those who do not plan to enroll during the summer will receive three disbursements to cover the regular academic year.
What are my obligations once I graduate from the program?
The Noyce Scholarship is awarded as a forgivable loan. All Noyce scholars must teach for two years for each year of funding received at a high-need public school within 5 years of graduation. Failure to either complete the two year program or to work in a high needs school within five years of graduate will cause the scholarship to repaid, plus interest and fees.
Job placement assistance will be available to Noyce scholars as part of the program.
